In January 2023, the new EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR) entered into force. The FSR gives the EU Commission wide-ranging powers to investigate subsidies from outside the EU which may distort competition in the single market, from July 2023. In addition, companies involved in mergers and acquisitions or public procurement processes may be required to notify the Commission and obtain approvals.
